What’s the meaning of life? Why is the sky blue? How often should I wash my hair? Life is packed with tough questions and while we can’t really help you with the first two (though the sky thing is pretty well explained here, if you’re interested) we can help you out with the hair one! We asked ELEVEN Australia Co-Creative Director, Joey Scandizzo for his top hair-washing advice, from the right products to pick to how often you should be shampooing. Read on to wash right.
How important is your hair-washing technique?
It’s really important because you can’t have a healthy hair with an unhealthy scalp. “You need to make sure you’re cleansing your scalp properly, keeping it clean and ridding it of oil build-up and residue, which can lead to flaky scalps and irritation,” says Joey. “Plus massaging your scalp when using shampoo will invigorate and bring blood to the surface, even helping to awaken dead hair follicles.”
How often should you wash your hair?
It’s really just as often as your hair needs it. “The general rule of thumb though is that finer hair needs to be washed more often as it can look greasy and separate more quickly than thicker hair types.”
How do you know if a shampoo or conditioner is right for you?
“I recommend choosing a shampoo based on your scalp’s health or needs. Meaning, if your hair is oily, go for a deep cleansing shampoo such as ELEVEN Australia Deep Clean Shampoo, or a hydrating shampoo like ELEVEN Australia Hydrate My Hair Moisture Shampoo, if it’s dryer.” Then, pick your conditioner based on your hair type. “If your hair is frizzy, choose a smoothing conditioner such as ELEVEN Australia Smooth Me Now Anti-Frizz Conditioner, if it’s fine and limp choose a volumising formula such as ELEVEN Australia I Want Body Conditioner, which won’t weigh the hair down,” says Joey. “Or your hair type is dry, choose a conditioner that’s hydrating such as ELEVEN Australia Hydrate My Hair Moisture Conditioner.”
Do you support the double shampoo?
“It depends how long it has been between washes,” explains Joey. “If you can’t get a good lather on the first wash because it’s been a few days since your last shampoo, I recommend going twice.”
What’s the biggest mistake people make when washing their hair?
“Not squeezing out excess water from your hair after shampooing, before applying conditioner,” says Joey. “Your hair is like a sponge and can only absorb so much! If your hair is still sopping wet after rinsing the shampoo out, it won’t be able to absorb the conditioner properly, meaning you won’t get the most out of the product and you’ll likely end you using too much.”
What if you have really thick hair?
“If you have longer, thicker hair it’s really important to comb through your conditioner to help distribute it evenly through to the ends where it needs moisture the most,” says Joey. “However, hair is extra prone to breakage when it’s wet and brushing can compromise the elasticity, so I recommend using a wide tooth comb such as ELEVEN Australia Orange Carbon Fibre Comb.”
